Poll Reveals 92% of Yeovil Residents Question Club Owner Martin Hellier’s Suitability Amid Controversy

In a recent poll of over 15,000 residents in Yeovil, Somerset, an overwhelming 92% expressed that they believe Martin Hellier, the current owner of Yeovil’s non-league football club, is not a fit and proper individual to manage the club. Only a small 8% showed support, with most of these supporters identifying as devoted fans of the club. This survey, reaching a significant portion of the town's 50,000 residents, sheds light on local sentiment following recent revelations and controversies surrounding Hellier’s behaviour and language,

The controversy stems from allegations regarding Hellier’s reported use of illegal Class A drugs, alongside recent incidents where he allegedly referred to a disabled child using derogatory language, including the term "spastic," and made further offensive remarks, including wishes of cancer upon the child and his mother. These statements have sparked outrage in the community, with many locals condemning the remarks as wholly unacceptable and incompatible with the values of a community-centred football club.

The club itself has been a pillar of the community for many years, with average game attendance at 3,000, a portion of which is made up of fans from neighbouring towns and regions. However, Yeovil’s local residents, many of whom do not attend games regularly, have voiced their discontent, raising concerns about the club's reputation and its role in the community under Hellier’s leadership.

Since acquiring the club approximately 16 months ago, Hellier has reportedly been involved in several incidents, including physical altercations with fans in local bars, allegedly fuelled by drugs and alcohol. Additionally, he has faced criticism for banning numerous supporters and making derogatory statements toward residents, even allegedly directing threats and abusive language at women and children including death threats.

These actions have not only alienated many in the community but have also prompted an investigation by the FA, which is reviewing Hellier’s conduct and its potential impact on the reputation and integrity of Yeovil Town FC.

The FA’s investigation remains ongoing, and the poll’s results reflect a strong call for action by the FA .

As Yeovil residents continue to voice their concerns, the future of the club's ownership may hinge on the outcome of these investigations and the pressure from a community increasingly critical of Hellier’s actions.

I used to go to home games,I wouldn’t put another penny into the club whilst he is the owner.
