At least eight people have been killed in two consecutive Russian drone strikes on a medical center in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, Ukrainian officials have confirmed.
The first strike occurred on Saturday morning, claiming one life, followed by a second attack as patients and staff were evacuating, according to Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on his Telegram channel that Russia used Shahed drones in the assault, which also left eleven people injured.
Sumy, located near the Russian border, has been under heightened tension since Kyiv launched an offensive in the Kursk region on August 6, aimed at establishing a "buffer zone" within Russian territory. Regional prosecutors revealed that the initial strike hit the hospital around 7:35 a.m. local time, while 86 patients and 38 staff members were present.
