Heroic Rescue of 11-Month-Old Baby From Flooded Car Amid Storm Bert Chaos
An 11-month-old baby was rescued from a submerged car as Storm Bert wreaked havoc across Britain, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and widespread flooding.
Paige Newsome recounted the terrifying moment her partner, Andre Randles, pulled their son to safety through the window of their Volkswagen, which had become trapped in floodwaters on Woodhouse Road in Todmorden, West Yorkshire, on Saturday.
Speaking about the ordeal, Paige praised Andre's quick thinking and bravery, calling him a hero. She also criticized local authorities for failing to address the flooding risks in the area.
“Calderdale Council needs to sort this out ASAP! They’ve been notified multiple times by the owners of the house next to where our car is parked,” she said.
Storm Bert’s Devastation
The dramatic rescue highlights the dangerous conditions brought by Storm Bert, which continues to batter the UK with a mix of heavy rain, strong winds, and thawing snow.
The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for rain and wind covering much of the country, with more than 200 flood alerts in place across England, Wales, and Scotland.
Experts Warn of More Severe Weather
Officials have warned that the “worst is yet to come” as water levels continue to rise. Rivers across the UK are at risk of breaching, and emergency services have been working tirelessly to assist those affected.
The Environment Agency has urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and prepare for further disruption.
Calls for Action
Local residents, including Paige and Andre, are calling for urgent action to address flood-prone areas like Woodhouse Road. “This could have been so much worse,” Paige said. “The council needs to take responsibility before someone loses their life.”
As the storm intensifies, communities across the UK are bracing for further flooding, power outages, and travel disruption.
