French Police Shoot Dead Intended Arsonist
French police fatally shot an armed individual attempting to set fire to a synagogue in the northern city of Rouen, according to Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin.
"National police in Rouen neutralized an armed individual early this morning who clearly intended to set fire to the city’s synagogue," stated Mr. Darmanin.
He commended the police for their prompt response and bravery in handling the situation.
Firefighters were observed at the scene where a man, armed with a knife and an iron bar, was shot by police, according to a source close to the case.
Rouen's mayor expressed that the Normandy town is feeling "battered and shocked" in response to the incident.
Against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East and Israel's ground offensive in the Gaza Strip, France has recently elevated its alert level to the highest tier.
Tensions and frustration have escalated in France amidst the Israel-Hamas conflict. Antisemitic incidents have surged in the country, which is home to the largest Jewish and Muslim populations in Western Europe.
