Journalist David Knowles Death Ordered To Be Investigated

British Counter-Terror Police Assist in Investigation of Telegraph Journalist's Sudden Death in Gibraltar

British counter-terror police have joined an investigation into the sudden death of David Knowles, a 32-year-old journalist from The Telegraph who was known for presenting the award-winning podcast "Ukraine: The Latest." Knowles died while on holiday in Gibraltar on Sunday, reportedly from a suspected cardiac arrest.

The Royal Gibraltar Police (RGP) confirmed that they have requested assistance from UK Counter Terrorism Policing due to their expertise in handling international investigations. However, detectives stressed that there are no specific concerns regarding Knowles' death at this stage.

A postmortem examination is scheduled for Thursday, and specialist officers are currently providing support to Knowles' family during this difficult time.

In a statement, the RGP said, "We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of British national David Knowles on Sunday, 8th September, while he was on holiday in Gibraltar. His Majesty’s Coroner has been informed, and a coroner’s investigation is underway. Next of kin have been notified, and a specialist family liaison officer has been appointed."

The RGP added that while there are no immediate suspicions related to Knowles' death, the involvement of UK Counter Terrorism Policing was sought due to their extensive experience with international cases. "Primacy for the investigation remains with the RGP," the statement noted.

David Knowles had been with The Telegraph since 2020, initially as deputy head of social media before becoming head of audio development in June 2023. His podcast on the Russia-Ukraine war was a significant success, amassing nearly 100 million downloads. Due to his work covering the conflict, he had been added to a list of journalists banned from entering Russia.

In tribute, The Telegraph’s editor, Chris Evans, praised Knowles for his dedication and passion. "David was exuberant and innovative. He was deeply committed to the cause of the Ukrainian people and their fight against Russian aggression. Without his energy and vision, the Ukraine podcast wouldn’t have achieved the success it did. He was also a kind and gentle man, beloved by his colleagues."

A spokesperson for Counter Terrorism Policing confirmed their involvement, stating, "Support is being provided to the RGP following their request for specialist assistance in the investigation of a British national’s sudden death in Gibraltar. All further inquiries should be directed to the RGP."

The investigation continues as authorities seek to clarify the circumstances of David Knowles' untimely passing.
